COVID-19: The total number of cases recorded globally has surpassed 33 million, with circa 988k reported deaths according to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine.
Equities: Globally, stock are mostly higher. In Europe, gains were recorded this morning by the DAX (+2.5%), CAC 40 (+1.8%) STOXX 600 (+1.7%) and the FTSE 250 (+1.4%). In Asia, the Topix (+1.7%), Kospi (+1.3%), Hang Seng (+1.0%) and the CSI 300 (+0.3%) all closed higher. However, the S&P / ASX 200 was -0.2% lower on close. In the US, futures for the S&P 500 are up +0.9%.
VIX: The CBOE market volatility index is up +2.1% this morning to 26.9, meanwhile the Euro Stoxx 50 vix has decreased -4.7% to 25.9. Both indices remain elevated compared to their long term averages of 19.8 and 23.9.
Bonds: The UK 10-year gilt yield has softened +2bps to 0.21%, while both the US 10-year treasury yield and the German 10-year bund yield are up +1bp to 0.67% and -0.52%. The Italian 10-year bond yield has compressed -2bps to 0.88%.
Currency: Sterling and the euro are currently $1.28 and $1.16. Hedging benefits for US dollar denominated investors into the UK and the eurozone remains at 0.37% and 1.12% per annum on a five-year basis.
Oil: The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) remains below $40 per barrel at $39.92, while Brent Crude is currently $42.11.
Baltic Dry: The Baltic Dry increased for the seventh consecutive session on Friday, up +3.9% to 1,667, the highest the index has been since 20th July. In the week to 25th September, the Baltic Dry index rose +28.6%, the main driver of this were capesize rates, which increased +53.4% over the week.
Gold: Gold was priced at $1,860 per troy ounce on Friday. While this was +22% higher than it was at the start of January, the price of gold remains -10% lower than the record price reached on 6th August.
