Stephen Springham, head of retail research: “It’s impossible to overstate the dramatic impact the pandemic has had on the retail sector. In my 27 odd years covering the retail market its no exaggeration to say this is the single most dramatic event to ever happen to our market, more so than any recession including the global financial crisis and Brexit registered very low on the Richter scale compared to this. This is unprecedented for the retail sector, for whole parts of the market to be inactive. A lot of retailers have zero cash flow or limited cash flow if they are multi channel.”
