Describe the area
Set against the backdrop of Mount Yotei, Niseko is one of the most popular and famous ski resorts in Japan and continues to attract skiers and snowboarders from all over the world.
Why the area is up and coming
As well as its champagne powder snow, Niseko’s warm hospitality and excellent cuisine are key attractions drawing both skiing and non-skiing tourists to the region. Skiing has also gained prominence as a luxury pursuit among the rising Asian middle class who have begun making yearly pilgrimages, given the lack of quality ski options within the region. Niseko has also benefited from more than 20 direct international flights into Hokkaido.
My favourite bits
After a couple of days on the slopes, nothing beats a nice onsen soak to melt away life’s worries. I’m particularly fond of Goshiki Onsen, located on Mount Annupuri’s western face and away from the resort area. Built entirely out of wood, this unique onsen exudes a traditional old-time feel coupled with amazing views.
Who’s buying?
Local demand has been coming from mainly from buyers outside Hokkaido, while foreign interest is coming from Asian-based buyers, predominantly in Singapore and Hong Kong.
What will my money buy me?
Two to three-bedroom condominiums sized between 100 and 150 sq m with average prices between US$500,000 and US$1.5 million remain popular choices for investors.
