The 15th Century village is perfectly placed, with 220 kilometres of skiing in Val d’Anniviers, fantastic off-piste skiing and a cable car link to Zinal.
Grimentz is the gateway to the Moiry Glacier, and to the south of the village there are opportunities for some exceptional hiking.
The village is well-known for its bread-making, especially rye bread, which is plentifully produced by its bakeries, that sit aloft the snow on stilts.
Landscape
The village sits at more than 1,500 metres and lies roughly 7 kilometres south of Vissoie on the valley’s western side.
Several mountains lie south of Grimentz, including Corne de Sorebois, Col de Torrent and Pigne de la Lé.
The largest of the nearby towns is Sion, roughly 40 kilometres away.
Education
Nearby Crans-Montana, a year-round resort, has an excellent education provision for families considering relocating to the area, with Le Régent International School catering for children aged between 3 and 18.
The resort is also home to Les Roches, one of the world’s leading hospitality business schools, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Activities and Entertainment
During the winter season, the brilliant skiing area in Grimentz, which is linked to Zinal, offers perfect slopes for all levels, while snow-shoe trails, winter hiking and even ice climbing at the Mayoux ice falls are also popular.
Families will enjoy the toboggan runs as well as the natural skating rink.
In summer, the area’s 490 kilometres of hiking trails offer a mixture of challenges, with the Moiry Via Ferrata giving a vertiginous view of the Moiry dam. More leisurely pursuits are also available, with fishing, mini golf and wildlife-watching hides all on offer.
Art and Culture
The small village has a rich history that can be readily explored at sites as well as through walking tours.
The Bisse des Sarrasins, an irrigation channel constructed 500 years ago, offers a captivating walk between Pinsec and Vercorin, while museums in the town, including Maison de Grand-Maman, and its former mills which open their doors to visitors, give a glimpse of life in past centuries.

Food and Drink
Grimentz has a superb range of restaurants, including various options up the mountain, such as the historic Hotel Weisshorn, which was built in 1882 and sits at more than 2,300 metres altitude, while the Vin di Glacier offers wine-lovers a truly unique experience with its wine barrels that have ‘never been emptied’, including one with wine from 1886.
The area produces an abundant array of local delicacies, including Raclette d’Anniviers, rye bread, herbs, honey and dried meat, all of which should be sampled.
The village is located in Switzerland’s most productive wine region, Valais, which grows numerous popular wine varieties, including several indigenous grapes. These are used to make everything from robust reds through to delicate Fendant, made from the white Chasselas grape.
