Equities: In Europe, the STOXX 600 is currently up +0.4%, as is the FTSE 250 (+0.7%) and the DAX (+0.3%). However, the CAC 40 is down -0.2% this morning. In the US, futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are both flat. In Asia, the Topix (-0.5%) and the S&P / ASX 200 (-0.4%) closed down, while the Kospi (+1.8%), CSI 300 (+0.9%) and the Hang Seng (+0.7%) were all higher on close.


VIX: The CBOE market volatility index and the Euro Stoxx 50 volatility price index are currently 27.6 and 24.5. Both indices remain above their long term averages, indicating further expectations of near-term volatility.


Bonds: The UK 10-year gilt yield has softened +1bp to 0.12%, while the German 10-year bund yield has compressed -1bp to -0.50% and the US 10-year treasury yield is stable at 0.61%.


Currency: Sterling has appreciated to $1.29, while the euro remains at $1.17. Hedging benefits for US dollar denominated investors into the UK and the eurozone is 0.36% and 1.14% per annum on a five-year basis.


Gold: The price of gold has appreciated +2% over yesterday and +27% since January to $1,936 per troy ounce, a new record high.


Baltic Dry: The Baltic Dry index decreased for the sixth consecutive session yesterday, down -1.8% to 1,293, a new one month low. The index has moderated by over one third since recent highs in early July, albeit, the index is still +19% above where it was at the beginning of the year.


Oil: Brent Crude is up +1.3% over the morning to $43.98 per barrel, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is down -0.2% to $41.50 per barrel.


Lockdown: The UK has extended its travel advice against all but essential travel to Spain to include the Canary and Balearic islands. Meanwhile, the German foreign ministry has warned against travel to the Aragon, Catalonia and Navarra regions of Spain. Across Belgium, the size of social gatherings has been restricted and in Antwerp, a night-time curfew for all but essential workers has been imposed.
