Equities: In Europe, the STOXX 600 is currently -0.2% lower, as is the FTSE 250 (-0.6%) and the CAC 40 (-0.3%). However, the DAX has added +0.1% this morning, and has pared back year to date losses to just -3%. This comes as the German flash Manufacturing PMI moved into expansionary territory on Friday, above 50, for the first time in 19 months in July. In the US, futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are both up +0.3%. In Asia, the Hang Seng closed -0.4% down, while the Kospi (+0.8%), CSI 300 (+0.5%) and the S&P / ASX 200 (+0.3%) were all higher on close.


VIX: The CBOE market volatility index and the Euro Stoxx 50 volatility price index are currently 28.4 and 25.7. Both indices remain above their long term averages, indicating further expectations of near-term volatility.


Bonds: The US 10-year treasury yield and the German 10-year bund yield have both compressed -1bp to 0.58% and -0.47%. The UK 10-year gilt yield is down -2bps to 0.13%.


Currency: Both sterling and the euro have appreciated to $1.28 and $1.17, respectively. Hedging benefits for US dollar denominated investors into the UK and the eurozone is 0.34% and 1.09% per annum on a five-year basis.


Gold: The price of gold has appreciated to $1,901 per troy ounce, up +24% since January to a record high.


Lockdown: The UK government have now advised against all but essential travel to mainland Spain. Additionally, travellers from across Spain will need to self-isolate upon arrival in England for 14 days due to a rise in cases in the country. Following a new daily record of 145 reported cases in Hong Kong, from 29th July for seven days, gatherings are to be restricted to two people and dining in restaurants will be been banned. Compulsory mask wearing has also been expanded to cover outdoor areas.
