It’s always fascinating to discover who’s owned a home before you. Well, imagine if one of those former owners was Henry VIII, Elizabeth I or another member of the British monarchy? We’re not talking about Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or Balmoral Castle. But around the country, there are many historic homes that have been owned, lived in or visited by royalty. Every home has its story and these centuries-old houses must have some incredible tales to tell. If only their walls could talk.

These grand, historic homes are no longer the preserve of royalty. We have two incredible properties to showcase that are for sale or let. You could walk in royal footsteps, sleep where kings and queens have lain, and eat where royals, nobility and ministers have dined.

What do these historic homes have to offer? If you’re looking for a property with a sense of grandeur, exceptional architecture and extensive space - both inside and out - these homes deliver all that and an incredible amount more. They ooze history, charm, elegance and a definite ‘wow factor’.

Whilst our lives today are very different from our predecessors who lived in these historic homes before us, some similar lifestyle expectations remain – from privacy and security to space and seclusion, and the desire to be surrounded by beauty, elegance and style.

The two remarkable properties with royal links that feature below are both in spectacular rural locations - in Gloucestershire and Surrey - and provide unique opportunities for families to reimagine the classic country lifestyle.

7-10 bedroom home, Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire

The Lammas has a rich and interesting history dating back to Saxon times. William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda presented the manor house of Hampton to the Convent of the Holy Trinity in Caen, Normandy. Mynchen means ‘nun’ and that’s how the town of Hampton became known as Minchinhampton. The manor remained with the nuns for centuries until Henry VIII reclaimed it.

It’s had several high standing custodians since then, and the opportunity to become the next one has arisen. The country house was extensively remodelled in the 19th century into the Grade II listed Georgian manor you see here.

The Lammas is a magnificent property with immaculate grounds extending to five acres, exceptional ancillary accommodation (including a cottage, barn and stables), plus an indoor swimming pool and tennis court.

This grand home has an elevated position which amplifies its feeling of privacy and seclusion, as well as enabling spectacular views across the Gloucestershire countryside. Guide price: £8,500,000

5 bedroom home, Esher, Surrey

Waynflete Tower, a 15th century gatehouse in Surrey, names Henry VIII, Edward VI, Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey among its former owners. Now, the striking, four-storey tower is available for rent.

Originally the Palace of Esher, the tower is the only surviving remnant. New life has been breathed into Waynflete Tower with a complete renovation and the sympathetic addition of a glass extension which houses an additional kitchen and family room.

You may be surprised by how light-filled the pre-Tudor property can be. That’s thanks to the large 18th century windows that replaced the tiny, original apertures.

The current owner extols its virtues as a wonderful place to raise a family. It’s like the stuff of fairytales - living in your own ‘castle’ with swans wandering in the garden and swimming on the river. Situated in a gated, private estate, the home is within walking distance of Esher with its boutique shopping, bars and restaurants, and train links to London.

Its owner explains, “It appeals to people who are looking for something so unique, the sort of property they dream of living in but would never have the opportunity to buy.”  Rental price: £17,500 monthly, £4,038 weekly
