As the proverb goes, “Home is where the heart is,” and if one property perfectly represents this sentiment it is Hale Farm House. With large grounds fronting onto the River Arun, just a couple of miles from the picturesque village of Loxwood in West Sussex, this historic home dating back to the 13th century was at the centre of family life for Hansgeorg and Leonor Hofmann for more than three decades.

“When you have an older building you have a responsibility to maintain and look after it. We felt like we were custodians for the period we were there and we had a very happy 31 years,” describes Mr Hofmann.

The Hofmanns certainly poured love into the property, with thoughtful renovations that retained its period character. With additions in the 15th, 16th and 20th centuries, it has been transformed into a substantial and sociable six-bedroom house with abundant entertaining spaces. Features including unusually high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and welcoming inglenook fireplace add to its charm. Where it truly comes into its own though is its beautiful grounds, with extensive outbuildings, manicured gardens, tennis court, orchard, paddocks and more.

“The children left home and then we had four grandchildren who used the swimming pool and came at weekends and during the holidays. It was a very nice home – we had all these people playing and we hosted hog roast parties and events because it lends itself so well,” shares Mrs Hofmann. “For years we had Strictly Come Dancing parties because everyone watched it and we thought, when was the last time we danced?”

Selling a home that holds so many special memories was not an easy decision. “It was tough to leave after so long. But, you know, after a certain age the house is just too big,” says Mr Hofmann. “When we decided to market with Knight Frank we were extremely lucky to have Oliver Rodbourne looking after us. He was absolutely fantastic and communicative and we had a happy ending.”
