There’s something so refined and elegant about Regency style. The early 19th century era (1811 to 1820 officially), is characterised by a resurgence of romanticism, decorative arts and elegant design. Heavily influenced by Greek and Roman styles, Regency architecture is ornate, symmetrical and classical.

This enchanting style makes a wonderful backdrop. Hence its use on the big and small screen. When Bridgerton hit our screens in 2020, viewers devoured tales of high society families in Regency-era Britain. Its popularity soared when season three dropped recently, and episodes of the period drama were binge-watched within days. The drama, the passion, and importantly, the style made Bridgerton an absolute phenomenon.

But before Bridgerton, there was Jane Austen. First and foremost in print, but then on screen. Numerous adaptations of her classic novels have been made. Who can forget Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr Darcy? Or Gwyneth Paltrow, and more recently Anya Taylor-Joy, as Emma?

Regency style and Jane Austen are celebrated each September in Bath. The city is synonymous with that period’s architecture. From Friday 13th to Sunday 22nd September, the Jane Austen Festival takes place. The streets of Bath will be filled with people in empire dresses and bonnets, waistcoats and breeches. It’ll feel like stepping back into Regency era Bath.
