Sports fans rejoice, this summer has a packed schedule of major tournaments. Whilst that news will leave some groaning and switching on Netflix, others will have planned their entire summer around these fixtures.

These summer tournaments are in diverse, exciting locations too. The Euros are in multiple cities around Germany and the Summer Olympics are in Paris. In the UK, British summer staples – cricket and tennis – are in their natural homes of Lord’s and Wimbledon respectively. Then in Surrey, we have the summer festival of horse racing at Sandown.

Here, we’ll explore the five lovely locations hosting the sports events. For a sports fan, there’d be nothing better than living a stone’s throw from a stadium. The areas themselves have a lot to offer alongside showcasing brilliant sport.

St John’s Wood, London NW8

This desirable, leafy north London suburb is famous for two main reasons. It’s home to Abbey Road Studios and the iconic zebra crossing on The Beatles’ album cover. It’s also home to the sporting institution that is Lord’s Cricket Ground, which has been in this location since 1810. Both the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Middlesex Cricket Club are based at Lord’s. Cricket fans flock here from around the world to catch a match at the legendary ground.

When it’s not match day, St John’s Wood has a distinctly village feel. It’s remarkably tranquil for somewhere so close to central London (two stops on the Jubilee Line). You could easily walk the distance, and it’s a lovely experience as you pass through Regent’s Park on the way. Regent’s Canal also meanders through the area and it’s a wonderful place to take a stroll or stop in a cute cafe.

Wimbledon, London SW19

From 1st to 14th July, The Championships will take place at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon. Is there a more quintessentially English summer event? Spectators are dressed in linen suits and floaty, summer dresses and may even don a hat. They tuck into strawberries and cream with a glass of chilled English sparkling wine. And there’s always the hope that a Brit may win and that it won’t rain.

But year-round, Wimbledon is a wonderful place to live. It retains that quintessential English vibe. You see horses trotting through town daily. There are welcoming, traditional pubs and huge expanses of open green space to enjoy. Yet, you can be in central London in 20 minutes via overground or underground. Enjoy the convenience of city life with the beauty of rural aspects too. It’s a win-win.
