Inside Sainte-Maxime

Lovingly known as St Tropez’s low-key little sister, Sainte-Maxime retains a much more laid-back and traditional feel, with small fishing boats filling its port instead of the super yachts that moor up at its neighbour.

The town’s traffic-free Promenade Aymeric Simon-Lorière leads to a pleasant beach, while the seafront boasts plenty of excellent restaurants and cafés.

Some of the Côte d’Azur’s most splendid beaches are within Sainte-Maxime or close by, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Massif des Maures, which offers endless trails to hike, cycle or horse-ride.

Lifestyle

Sainte-Maxime is an outdoor lover’s dream with splendid beaches such as Plage de la Nartelle and Plage Les Eléphants offering chances to relax or engage in watersports.

The town has a vibrant culture, with glimpses of its past visible in the Tour Carrée, Sainte-Maxime’s only historic monument that was built to defend against pirates, and its small paved streets with traditional architecture that wind through its centre.

Being so close to the coast, seafood is in abundance, whether its in a brasserie or bar on the updated seafront or in a more formal restaurant in the centre of town.

On the edge of town, natural wonders such as the Esterel massif, a mountain of red-hued rocks, offer hikers, mountain bikers and even paragliders true escapism amid an eye-catching setting.

The Carré Ste-Maxime concert hall provides a venue for concerts and theatre productions, there is an excellent golf course called Bluegreen Sainte-Maxime, and families can enjoy the waterslides at Aqualand.
