Buying property in Mustique

The privately-owned paradise of Mustique has created a unique reputation among the likes of the super-rich and famous as the most aspirational hideaway for discerning homeowners.

Knight Frank is the exclusive sole real estate agent for property sales in Mustique thanks to its affiliation with The Mustique Company, the private island’s management company, for more than 20 years.

This puts us in an unrivalled position to assist with the select few annual purchase and rental enquiries for the roughly 100 homes on the tiny island, which is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The island first came to prominence in 1960 when Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth II, was gifted a 10-acre plot by the island's then-owner Colin Tennant (later Lord Glenconner).

Princess Margaret’s love of Mustique and her villa, Les Joiles Eaux, soon attracted celebrities including Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bryan Adams and Tommy Hilfiger to the island.

Characterised by rolling hills, lush terrain and stretches of deserted, pristine beaches, Mustique is surrounded by protected reefs and crystal clear seas.

Buying, Owning or Selling Property in Mustique

There are finite amounts of annual property sales on Mustique, with transactions discreetly handled by The Mustique Company, working together with Knight Frank.

Knight Frank is the exclusive sole international real estate agent thanks to its affiliation with both The Mustique Company and the island’s owners, meaning we have unique access to sale opportunities.

Activities

The tiny island has plenty of activities on offer, from hiking and watersports through to tennis and horse riding.

On Macaroni and Simplicity beaches, whose north-easterly shores face the Atlantic, the swell offers wilder conditions, while southwesterly facing Lagoon, Gelliceaux and Endeavour Bay offer calmer Caribbean waters for snorkelling, swimming and paddleboarding.

Exploring the 3-mile by 1.5-mile island can be done on foot via various hiking routes or on horseback, with horse trails finishing off with swimming on horseback in the sea.

The Cotton House hotel, one of two hotels on the island, houses an organic, natural spa offering bespoke luxurious treatments and massages, as well as instructor-led classes from yoga through to meditation.

Nearby islands offer residents further activities, including golf on Canouan – named in the Top 10 Best Golf Courses globally – and picnicking and snorkelling on Tobago Cays, the uninhabited island where Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow was marooned in The Pirates of the Caribbean.

Culture

Mustique’s entertainment hub is Basil’s Bar, which hosts an eclectic range of live music, guest DJ nights and themed parties, is best known for its world-famous Wednesday night Jump Up, Sunday Sunset Jazz events and annual Blues Festival.

The Cotton House, the hotel developed from an old cotton warehouse, is surrounded by 13 acres of tropical gardens, with its Great Room Bar and Veranda Restaurant at the heart of the estate.

The less formal Beach Café offers more relaxed surroundings for food and drink.

Accessibility

Mustique is accessed by plane, with Mustique Airways flights on the island’s own Twin Otter aircraft that run daily from St Lucia, and also from Barbados during peak season. The Mustique Company pre-approves all passengers.

The runway on Mustique is not lit, so planes are restricted to landing during daylight hours.

Private charters can also be arranged to Mustique from St Lucia, Barbados, Canouan or some other neighbouring islands.

Mustique can also be accessed by boat from St Vincent or Bequia.
