What do you consider your most significant achievement as a woman in your field, and how did you overcome any challenges?

My most significant achievement as a woman in my field is to break free from the stereotypes that society sets for women. When I first entered the industry, I encountered the belief that women were better suited for supporting roles and rarely could be excellent brokers. I proved them wrong and began my career in real estate. In any field, there will always be individuals who doubt your abilities or question your capabilities. Remembering yourself that you are amazing, and that failure is a natural part of growth is crucial. When facing challenges, I find taking a step back for a few minutes or even a day helpful. I can approach the situation with a fresh perspective and determine the best course of action by allowing myself to regain clarity.

How did you break some gender stereotypes when you started your career?

In the early stages of my career, I encountered gender stereotypes that challenged my confidence and credibility as a young female broker. To overcome these biases, I adopted a proactive mindset and focused on building a strong knowledge base and a reputation for honesty and professionalism.  I recognised the importance of projecting confidence in my abilities, even when faced with scepticism due to my young age and gender.

To counter the perception that my male counterparts were more knowledgeable, I invested time learning about international properties, including markets I hadn't personally visited, such as the United Kingdom. I studied the tube map, memorised top universities and their campuses in London, and immersed myself in understanding the market. Transparency was crucial in building trust with clients. By prioritising honesty, I built strong relationships with clients who appreciated my dedication to their best interests.

How do you advocate gender equality and inclusion in your role or industry, and what advice would you give to other women looking to do the same?

In my leadership journey, I have embraced the power of equity over equality, especially within the International Project Marketing team, where 75% of members are women of differing ages and roles. Recognising the multifaceted lives of women, I've championed initiatives that prioritise work-life balance, offer mentorship opportunities, and foster inclusive communication. I believe every individual has their strengths and weaknesses, and we are all unique individuals regardless of our gender.

What are your strategies for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and how do you prioritise self-care and well-being?

Effective time management and prioritising tasks are crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Recognising that our work is never truly finished, it is essential to identify what needs immediate attention and what can wait. This approach not only improves productivity but also allows for a more fulfilling personal life. During vacations, I would make a conscious effort to disconnect from work, even if just for a short period each day. Spend quality time with loved ones or engage in activities that bring you joy, enabling you to recharge and return to work refreshed.

How do you envision the future of gender diversity in your industry, and what steps do you believe should be taken to achieve greater equality and inclusion?

Gender diversity in my industry will progress as awareness grows and inclusivity becomes a priority. However, to achieve greater equality and inclusion, proactive steps must be taken by every business owner and higher management team. This includes implementing policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization. Additionally, providing opportunities for mentorship, leadership development, and advancement for women is crucial. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowering women in leadership positions, we can create a more equitable and diverse industry for future generations.

What advice would you give young women just starting their careers, and what are the essential skills or qualities they should cultivate to succeed?

Don't wait for opportunities to come to you; be proactive and create them yourself. Identify your passions, talents, and areas of expertise, and seek out projects or roles that align with these strengths. Never stop learning and growing. Seek knowledge from various sources, including your boss, peers, and mentors. Stay curious and open-minded, and invest time in reading, attending workshops, or pursuing further education to expand your skill set and stay ahead in your field.

Believe in your abilities and don't let others limit your potential. Developing self-confidence is crucial for navigating challenges and seizing opportunities. Surround yourself with supportive and encouraging individuals and remember that setbacks are opportunities for growth and learning.
