Advocating an inclusive leadership style

Empathy is a powerful tool in the workplace, particularly for leaders who aim to bridge the gap between professional and personal lives. As a mother of two young children, I understand the unique struggles of working parents, and I believe that empathetic leadership can make a significant difference in your professional journey.

Reflecting on my personal journey, I appreciate the understanding and support I received from my Managing Director and Chairman during my early days as a parent. They exhibited empathy and granted the flexibility required to navigate my dual responsibilities. This personal experience significantly influences my leadership approach, as I am committed to extending similar support and understanding to all team members managing the challenges of work and family life.

Drawing inspiration from diverse women role models

Throughout my professional journey, I have been inspired by various women who have made a significant impact in their respective fields. From authors and business leaders to artists and sustainability advocates, these women have demonstrated dedication, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

As an avid reader, I have found inspiration from the works of influential figures like Sheryl Sandberg and Hillary Clinton. Sandberg's "Lean In" philosophy has motivated me to actively pursue my aspirations and play a proactive role in my career. The message of empowering women to lean into their ambitions has deeply resonated with me, compelling me to continually challenge myself within this industry.

Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo, stands as a guiding figure for me, showcasing a steadfast executive leadership style and using her influence to advocate for openness about the challenges faced as a woman of colour in a high-powered executive role. Her exemplary leadership style and dedication to excellence have encouraged me to strive for success in my career while actively fostering a positive and supportive work environment for my team.

Even a pop icon such as Taylor Swift has been a source of inspiration, as she uses her star power to spread love, light, and positivity around the world. Her dedication to her craft and her commitment to making a positive impact inspire me to do the same in this industry.

Breaking barriers: democratising real estate data in opaque markets

Throughout my career in real estate research and consultancy, I have been fervently committed to advancing the democratisation of real estate data, particularly in opaque markets. When I first started, there was a noticeable lack of accessible real estate data in Malaysia, in contrast to more transparent markets such as Singapore. This made it difficult to conduct comprehensive research and provide accurate client insights. To tackle the issue of limited data availability, I am a strong advocate for data democratisation, emphasising the importance of making real estate data accessible to everyone. I constantly engage with industry professionals, government agencies, and other stakeholders to build support and promote collaboration in gathering, sharing, and analysing data. My firm belief is that accessible data and insights are paramount for informed decision-making, contributing to the creation of better real estate and better spaces for everyone.

Overcoming challenges and advocating inclusion

In my experience, I have observed a prevalent challenge for women, particularly those of Asian descent, which resolves around a hesitation to assert themselves in the workplace. This reluctance may be rooted in cultural norms, a fear of judgment, or a lack of confidence. However, refraining from expressing our thoughts and ideas can hinder progress towards a more inclusive and equitable industry.

To overcome this challenge, it is essential to cultivate an environment where women feel both comfortable and empowered to articulate their opinions. Encouraging open communication, providing mentorship, and actively championing diversity and inclusion initiatives are pivotal steps toward creating a supportive atmosphere where the value of everyone's voice is acknowledged and appreciated.

Insights for women to succeed

My foremost advice to women in the real estate industry is to focus on delivering high-quality work and letting it speak for itself. Hard work, dedication, and excellent results are gender-neutral, and they will help you build a strong professional reputation in the industry. Don't be afraid to express your thoughts and stand up for your beliefs. Speaking up is essential for success in your career and contributes to a more inclusive and diverse industry.

When navigating family life alongside a career, having a robust support system has proved indispensable to me. Lean on your partner, family members, friends, and understanding colleagues who can provide the flexibility and assistance you need. Building a successful career while raising a family truly embodies the proverbial “it takes a village”.

Equally vital is the imperative of self-care, both physically and mentally. Prioritise your well-being by establishing boundaries, taking breaks, and engaging in activities that help you relax and recharge. A flourishing work-life balance starts with a healthy, thriving version of yourself.
Finally, remember that your journey is not just about building a career but crafting a legacy. Embrace challenges with resilience, celebrate your victories, and empower others along the way. By doing so, you contribute to shaping a future where women in real estate continue to thrive and inspire generations to come.
