_Should I move to Provence? Expert advice on relocating abroad
With its rolling hills, romantic Mediterranean architecture, relaxed way of life, fabulous weather and opportunity to ‘get away from it all', it’s easy to see why Provence is booming in popularity amongst international buyers. Of course, the appeal of this corner of the globe is nothing new – but post-pandemic, Provence is really shining.
Kate Everett-Allen, Partner in Knight Frank’s Residential Research team, agrees: ''We looked at Provence very closely during the pandemic as there was such a huge uptick in demand, especially from international buyers. Over the last two years, it’s been one of our busiest markets. People are after somewhere that’s going to offer them space and wellness, which Provence offers in abundance – and we expect this demand only to increase.’’
Charlotte Reiss (@vivietmargot), owner of a French homeware brand, moved to Provence with her young family from California after initially deciding to buy a holiday home in the area. Here, she shares her experience and offers her top tips to those looking to make a similar move.

Why did you move to Provence? What drew you to it?
I’m such a Francophile. With its amazing smells, marketplaces and countryside, there’s something so magical about Provence. It’s a place where, even as an international buyer, I now feel truly at home. There are so many wonderful areas to explore, such as Grasse, St. Tropez and Cassis – which you can all reach by car - and there’s such a community here, too. We were also keen to immerse our children in another culture and way of life; they’re now bilingual, which is lovely.
How did your French property journey start?
11 years ago, my husband and I decided to buy a small holiday home in the area. We soon fell in love with Provence and a year and a half ago, decided to move here permanently. However, with two young kids, we knew that we needed a bigger property and so were introduced through a friend to our Knight Frank agent, Nicola Christinger, who helped us every step of the way.

How did Knight Frank help you?
Nicola and the Knight Frank team were incredible. I couldn’t have done it without them. From advice on the different school systems to local hotspots, Nicola was on hand to support and guide my family as we navigated our property search and prepared to make that permanent move. As someone who had previously relocated to the area with her own family - and had therefore been in a similar situation - her advice was invaluable. You need an expert who really knows the area, and that’s what I found in Nicola.
Do you need a large budget to own property in Provence?
Not at all. When we bought our holiday home, it was with a budget of $100,000. Obviously, there are some really luxurious properties here – but you don’t need millions. There’s a home here for everyone. It’s easy to see Provence as an out-of-reach 'dream' world, but living here needn’t be a fantasy. If you’ve done your research, know what you want and have a great estate agent behind you, it’s very much achievable.
Is there a varied range of property types?
Absolutely. From traditional, peaceful farmhouses to townhouses, there'll be something to suit you and your family - whether you want more of a retreat or want to be closer to the centre of things.

Nicola Christinger, Associate, says: ''I’ve worked in the French property market for 14 years, living in France for 12 years and raising my daughters there. When it comes to moving abroad, a lot of it is about demystifying the process. It can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. As someone who’s been through it, it feels natural to pass on this experience to my clients. Being so involved in their lives and seeing them find their perfect home and achieve their dream is a real emotional journey.''
