Knight Frank’s ski sentiment survey reveals that buyers are looking for a lot more from their alpine property purchase than a base from which to ski.

Over 27% of buyers are looking for a resort which offers a range of sports and amenities throughout the year, looking to get the most out of their investment.

Accessibility remains important, with 18% of buyers saying it’s their number one priority.

The distance from an airport is also important. Some 30% of buyers want to travel less than 1.5 hours from the airport, outlining the demand for easy access to the slopes.

A further 31% are willing to drive up to 3 hours from the airport to their home, but numbers drop significantly after that.

Proximity to ski slopes and general amenities lead the rankings when buyers were asked what is most important to them when purchasing a ski home, with the provision of summer sports and good mountaineering trails being notably important too.

Property preferences

Mountain views, high-speed broadband and outdoor space, are the top priorities for purchasers, all of which have grown in demand since the pandemic.

Existing homes still appeal to purchasers more than new-build properties, but a large proportion remain undecided.

Brexit

Since the UK’s departure from the European Union, UK buyers have been limited to a stay of 90 days out of every 180. However, asked whether the rule had any impact on their decision to buy, 32% of respondents said had made no difference at all when considering a ski home purchase, 45% stated it had made a little difference, only 23% commented it had made a big difference.
